Cummins, ArvinMeritor Report Improved Earnings

Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. said Tuesday its profit jumped in the fourth quarter due in part to strong sales in China, India and Brazil.

The company’s net income grew to $270 million from $43 million a year ago. Sales rose 3% to $3.4 billion.

The engine segment saw a 12% increase in sales to $2.17 billion. Sales results were driven in part by an increase in demand for truck engines and components related to the 2010 Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards, Cummins said. The sales value of mid-range engines shipped jumped to $100,600 in the quarter, 71% higher than reported in the third quarter.

Truck components maker ArvinMeritor Inc. said its fiscal first-quarter was break-even, compared with a loss of $961 million a year ago, which included $856 million in write-downs.

Sales for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 were $1.1 billion, down from $1.2 billion a year ago but about 16% higher than its fiscal fourth quarter.

For the current quarter, ArvinMeritor forecast its earnings and revenue before special items would be flat from the previous quarter.
