Fontaine Modification is recalling 811 street sweepers and refuse trucks built by Navistar International Corp. due to a potential problem with dual steering installed by Fontaine.

The recall applies to International model 4300, 4400, 7300, 7400 and 7500 trucks manufactured between Jan. 1, 2011, and Jan. 9, 2013, and modified by Fontaine to be steered from either front seat.

Certain retaining clips for the steering assembly may not be completely engaged and may come loose in the vehicles identified in the recall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Without a retaining clip, steering may feel loose and be unresponsive, potentially increasing steering difficulty and the likelihood of a crash, NHTSA said.

Kevin Barkley, Fontaine’s quality and warranty manager, said the company reported the recall to NHTSA after discovering the problem, but said the company has received no customer complaints or reports of crashes as a result of the defect.
