Toyota is recalling about 150,000 Tacoma midsize pickups in the U.S. due to a defect that can cause the spare tires to fall from beneath the trucks, the Associated Press reported.

The affected trucks were built during the 2001 through 2004 model years, and were sold or registered in 20 cold-weather states and Washington, D.C., AP said. The recall affects a plate used to hold the spare tire under the cargo bed. When exposed to road salt over a long period of time, the plates can rust and break, which can cause the plate to fail and lead to the spare tire falling, AP said, citing a statement from Toyota.

The problem has caused two minor accidents and no injuries, Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said. In each case a tire fell and struck a vehicle following the affected Tacoma pickups.

Dealers will inspect and may replace the plates at no cost to the owners. The company will start notifying owners by mail in December, AP said.
